Cirion Technologies has announced plans to build the SAC2 subsea cable, connecting Argentina, Brazil, and the US.
Announced at the company’s 2024 Forum in Argentina, the cable will have an initial capacity of 18Tbps and will be operational by Q1 2025, according to Leonardo Barbero, president of connectivity at Cirion.
The company also announced plans to expand the capacity of its existing data center in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as well as building a new one on the outskirts of the capital.
Gabriel del Campo, regional vice president of business, said the company will add 1.5MW to its existing data center.
Details on the new data center build have not yet been provided.
Cirion will be investing more than $300 million in the region this year, said del Campo.
He added: “We have 18 data centers in Latin America. 40 MW are installed in the region. The two new data centers we are building in Peru and Chile will double that, with 20MW each. We have also just bought land to build another data center in Rio de Janeiro with 80MW. This is the speed of change we are experiencing and Cirion is preparing for it.”
At the end of last year, the company announced plans to expand its São Paulo facility in Brazil. Its other Brazilian facilities include Rio de Janeiro (RIO1), and Curitiba (CUR1).
The company, spun out of Lumen and backed by the Stonepeak investment firm, also has a presence in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Venezuela, and Florida, US.
Claro, EdgeConneX, and Telecom Argentina all have a presence in the Buenos Aires region.
Cables currently landing in Argentina include the Tannat, Unisure, SAm-1, SAC, Malbec, Bicentenario, and ARSAT cables with the Firmina cable set to launch this year.
