Chinese AI startup Z.ai is partially operating a 1GW data center solely using Chinese-made chips, according to a Bloomberg report.

The campus has supposedly completed construction, but details about the location and the exact capacity available to Z.ai is unclear.

A person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that the company has built or operates several computing clusters each with more than 10,000 chips.

It is also unclear which Chinese company’s chips were being used.

Z.ai, which has developed an LLM called GLM, was formerly known as Zhipu AI until 2025. It is one of several Chinese AI companies – alongside DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, and Manus – which have received international recognition.

China has been trying to wean domestic AI companies off of Nvidia chips, although it recently allowed a few companies to purchase Nvidia’s H200 chips, which have been at the center of controversy ever since US President Trump announced in December 2025 that their sale would be allowed.
