Charter Communications president and CEO Chris Winfrey has insisted that M&A is not essential to the company's long-term strategy.

Winfrey made the comments during the company's Q4 earnings call, after he was asked about speculation surrounding potential mergers for the company.

There have been reports in recent weeks suggesting that either T-Mobile or Comcast could acquire telecoms company Charter. Comcast and Charter are two of the biggest cable companies in the country.

"Our strategy … to create value has never been dependent on M&A," said Winfrey last week, as reported by Light Reading. "In fact, it's really been moving in purely from an organic growth perspective and how do we create value for shareholders from that perspective."

Winfrey didn't rule out any potential deals either during his conversation with industry analysts. He noted that the company can open up future M&A opportunities by being a good operator.

"The door for M&A – I think there's a lot of chatter that it's also wide open. I don't think it's wide open," he added. "I think any M&A transaction that you have to do in any administration, anytime, it has to be good for customers, and has to be good for jobs."

There's been much talk about President Donald Trump's Administration being expected to be more favorable to M&A.

In November, Charter announced it had agreed to acquire Liberty Broadband as part of an all-stock transaction.

Liberty Broadband, which is controlled by American businessman John Malone, owns a 26 percent stake in broadband and cable firm Charter and Alaskan telecommunications subsidiary GCI. Malone suggested at the time that Charter could merge with rival cable company Comcast in the future.

The company previously acquired Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks LLC back in 2016 for $78.7 billion.

Charter announced in its Q4 earnings that it shed 177,000 Internet customers for the quarter, dropping its total subscriber base to 30.1 million.

However, Charter's mobile business Spectrum continued its growth, adding 529,000 mobile lines for the quarter, and 2.1 million in total for 2024. In total, Charter now serves 9.9 million mobile customers.

Fourth quarter revenue of $13.9bn grew by 1.6 percent year-over-year, driven mainly by its mobile business, which was up 37.4 year-on-year.
