Charter Communications is set to cut 1,200 jobs.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, the cable company is shedding around one percent of the company's entire 95,000-strong workforce.

A source told the WSJ that the job cuts will primarily impact corporate and back-office functions at Charter's headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, and around the country.

The layoffs are aimed at streamlining operations and won't impact sales or service employees.

It comes amid reports last month that rival Comcast is planning to cut jobs as part of plans to centralize operations and boost its broadband business.

Charter is currently in the middle of a $34.5 billion merger with Cox Communications, which is set to create the biggest cable operator in the US.

The merged entity will retain its headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, plus Cox’s Atlanta, Georgia, campus.

Charter noted that it expects the merger to be completed contemporaneously with the previously announced Liberty Broadband merger.
