US-based multi-tenant data center operator Bytegrid has bought Seattle-based colocation specialist NetRiver in a bid to extend its portfolio to the US west coast and create national coverage and improve its managed service offering.

The terms of the sale give Bytegrid all of NetRiver’s assets including the customer contracts, land and its multi-tenant data center facility.

The acquisition gives Bytegrid 170 new business and cloud service provider clients.

NetRiver's existing customer base provide colocation, cloud servers, managed storage and connectivity from its 45,000 sq ft facility.

Bytegrid said it has plans to extend the hall capacity and add to the 5.4MW of available critical power and multiple carriers.

Bytegrid has also bought the leasehold rights to a second data center nearby in Spokane, Washington (a neighbouring suburb to Seattle) which serves primarily as a base for disaster recovery for the Seattle customers.

Terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.

Bytegrid is to offer additional data center space to its existing enterprise, government and service provider clients in a bid to move them onto new colo data center space to serve the Seattle Metro area.

It is also offering to port its new NetRiver clients into its own national network of data center locations.

Bytegrid is in transition towards mid-tier, large enterprise and government end of the data center market, according to Bytegrid CEO Ken Parent.

"NetRiver is a leading market innovator in the Seattle area, serving a technologically-savvy, diverse customer base. It adds substantial technology expertise," Parent said.

Bytegrid owns and operates five data centers in five regions across the US with 700,000 sq ft of multi-tenant colocation data center space.
