BT Group has sold its BT Federal unit to 22nd Century Technologies (TSCTI) as the British operator continues its UK-centric consolidation.

The US contracting subsidiary will be rebranded to 22nd Century Networks. No financial details were disclosed about the deal, which has been cleared by the US Federal Communications Commission.

Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Reston, Virginia, BT Federal provided managed network, cybersecurity, and IT modernization services to American federal agencies.

TSCTI said the unit is expected to enhance its managed network services by extending coverage nationwide across all 50 states and providing fully integrated, interoperable solutions to connect enterprise systems to the network Edge.

BT meanwhile said the deal strengthened its UK-focused strategy, which has seen it sell off the likes of BT Italia, financial cloud platform Radianz, and its Irish wholesale and enterprise business.

The operator also said the Federal sale would allow the standalone unit BT International to focus on multinational customers in the multi-cloud connectivity market.

“With 22nd Century Networks, we are advancing digital modernization while also securing the network layer that underpins our nation’s most critical operations across the Department of War [still officially known as the DoD], Department of Justice, and Department of State. By delivering secure, sovereign infrastructure engineered for zero trust, interoperability, and mission continuity in any environment, we are deepening our commitment to protecting the people, systems, and missions that keep our nation safe,” said Anil Sharma, CEO of 22nd Century Technologies.
