US data center developer BorderPlex Digital Assets has launched a program to source up to 500MW of renewable generation by 2028 to power its data center portfolio in New Mexico.
The initiative, dubbed Project Green, aims to scale from 500MW to 1GW of capacity by 2032, representing one of the largest arrays of renewable energy in New Mexico. The program will evaluate a range of generation sources, including solar, wind, geothermal, and hybrid configurations.
The company has said that it expects to issue a Request for Information (RFI) by January 16, 2026, to gather market input from qualified developers and partners, followed by a Request for Proposal (RFP) for select solutions.
“Project Green is a priority initiative to advance renewable power as part of a portfolio-based approach to power generation and storage that delivers infrastructure affordability and reliability,” BorderPlex Digital Assets said in a statement. “BorderPlex Digital Assets believes in the power of ‘and’ – by utilizing advanced technologies, we can build infrastructure for economic growth and deliver sustainable environmental outcomes. Project Green reflects a disciplined, pragmatic approach to incorporating renewable energy in a way that supports long-term reliability and the substantial power needs of the growth economy.”
The program is tied to an MoU signed between BorderPlex and the State of New Mexico last February, which sets the parameters for the development of reliable, low-carbon electricity generation as part of a broader portfolio of power resources.
The power generated by the project is expected to support a range of offtaker solutions, including new data center demand, micro-grid configurations, and delivery to broader market or utility partners.
BorderPlex is currently developing its flagship data center campus in Doña Ana County, New Mexico. The proposed facility, called ‘Project Jupiter,’ would be built near Pete Domenici Highway and New Mexico Highway 136, outside Sunland Park, which is on the US border with Mexico. Site plans show that Project Jupiter would comprise four buildings, micro-grid facilities, natural gas power plants, a battery storage center, and a desalination plant across 1,400 acres.
The project has also received financial backing from Stack Infrastructure, which announced its involvement in August.
The project has faced opposition, however, with a number of local residents suing the Doña Ana County Commission, alleging that the body’s decision to approve funding mechanisms and tax rebates for a data center project was marred by procedural and regulatory irregularities.
