Newly founded company SBB Bytefortress is planning a data center in Wolmirstedt, Germany.

Local newspaper Volkstimme reports that the data center is a "billion dollar" project.

Few details about the data center project are available, but it will feature a battery storage system.

The facility will be located a few kilometers away from where Deutsche Telekom operates a data center in Magdeburg, also in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. DT also has a data center in nearby Biere, which has a storage capacity of 970 petabytes on around 100,000 servers.

Thus far, only a visualization of the project has been released, which shows two large buildings with air conditioning units on the roof and ancillary structures.

A report from Datacenter Insider notes that with information about the project extremely limited - including investors, construction companies, and operating structures - alongside the complicated approval system in Germany, it is unclear how concrete the plans are.

SBB Bytefortress was founded on August 12, 2025, with the goal of developing, constructing, and operating battery and data storage.

According to CompanyHouse, SBB Bytefortress is headquartered in Wolmirstedt and is owned by Andreas Eberhart, who is also behind SBB Imobilien and Eberhardt Holding, a company that invests in and manages real estate assets. DCD has reached out for comment.

Saxony-Anhalt is located southwest of Berlin, and is not typically a data center hotspot. Besides the Deutsche Telekom data centers, euNetworks operates a colocation facility in the state.

Although the market is currently small, a few developers have expressed interest in developing data centers in the area. Germany's DataHall is planning a data center in Halle/Saale, and this month saw a proposal for a renewable energy and AI data center campus in Schraplau.
