Amazon Web Services (AWS) and global renewable energy developer RWE have signed a strategic framework agreement to provide the renewable developer with access to AWS’ suite of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services.
The agreement will see AWS provide RWE with cloud services to support its digitalization process. The services will include access to the hyperscaler's AI and data analytics products. RWE will utilize the services to support its innovation within trading, commercial asset optimization, including renewables, and energy AI applications.
In addition, the partnership will foster greater collaboration at RWE’s AI Research Laboratory in Seattle. The lab, which was established in 2024, aims to support the development of forecasting models using AI. The forecasting will focus on global weather systems, renewable energy, and probabilistic forecasting.
AWS has previously supported RWE in migrating its mission-critical trading applications to the cloud, delivering a 30 percent performance improvement in end-of-day runtimes.
“This strategic framework agreement with AWS represents a significant milestone in our commitment to supporting the digital infrastructure that powers our modern economy with clean energy,” said Ulf Kerstin, COO of RWE Supply & Trading. “Advancing digitalization and electrification are also driving up demand for electricity. Our competitive portfolio of renewable and flexible energy generation is ideally suited to meet this demand. We are proud to expand our global collaboration with a company like AWS.”
The partnership will also support AWS’s drive to power its operations through low-carbon energy sources. The two companies have already signed seven Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) in the US market for 1.1GW of power.
“Through this expanded collaboration with RWE, we’ll continue to explore new sources of carbon-free energy to help decarbonize our operations,” Howard Gefen, general manager for Energy and Utilities at AWS, said.
RWE has a robust portfolio of renewable energy assets across the US, totaling around 10GW of overall capacity. The company is targeting significant expansion across with country with a renewable pipeline of more than 24GW in various stages of development.
The company has also signed several Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) with other data center developers. Recent examples include a 446MW PPA with Microsoft and a 200MW solar PPA with Meta in Texas.
