AWS has broken ground on its $11 billion data center campus in St. Joseph County, Indiana.
Plans for the New Carlisle campus first emerged in April 2024, with the final seal of approval being given in August.
While the groundbreaking ceremony officially took place on September 30, construction of the site has been underway for quite some time, as reported by WNDU.
“We made the commitment that they were going to have a development agreement. Amazon went ahead and started building, they have a time frame,” said Carl Baxmeyer, St. Joseph County commissioner. “The trust between the county, Amazon, it was there early on.”
The first four buildings on the site are expected to be completed by the end of this year, with construction continuing for at least another decade. Images have suggested the campus could feature up to 22 buildings.
The development is projected to create around 1,000 new jobs in the local area.
Microsoft and Google have both announced data center builds in Indiana, in Mishawaka and Fort Wayne respectively.
Meta, US Signals, DataBank, Netrality, and Digital Crossroads all have a presence in Indiana.
