The Australian Stargate data center set to be built by domestic developer NextDC will offer 612MW of capacity, according to planning documents.

The company is proposing the construction of the facility in Eastern Creek, a major logistics hub in Sydney’s western suburbs.

The proposal, titled NextDC S7, was submitted in mid-March, but the land for the project – a 255,135 sqm (2,746,270 sq ft) parcel in Eastern Creek, a major logistics hub in Sydney’s western suburbs – was acquired for AU$353 million (US$244m) back in October 2024.

At the time, NextDC said that it would offer up to 550MW at full buildout.

In December 2025, OpenAI and NextDC announced that they had signed a Memorandum of Understanding that would see the ChatGPT-maker use some of the data center’s capacity, with the option to scale over time.

The parcel is located south of Honeycomb Drive and east of Future Archbold Road and is surrounded by other industrial facilities. To its east lies the manufacturing facility of roof-maker Rhino-Rack, and the Bingo Recycling Ecology Park is to its north.

A preliminary plan for the campus shows that it would consist of nine data center buildings spread equally across three blocks, as well as a substation.

The proposal is being treated as a State Significant Development, a classification that designates a development as important to the state. This is assessed by the New South Wales government rather than the local authority.

The proposal is currently in its early stages and is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement, which is a report on the project’s environmental footprint.

NextDC has six data centers in Sydney in operation or development, totaling just under 500MW and 178,500 sqm (1.9 million sq ft). As well as S3 and S6 in Artarmon, NextDC operates three data centers (S1, S2, and S5) in Macquarie Park and one (S4) in Horsley Park.

Real estate firm Goodman also filed to develop a data center campus in Eastern Creek in January. Known as Project Atlas, the three-story facility would total 99,310 sqm (one million sq ft) and offer up to 500MW of capacity. Documents suggest Goodman could invest up to AU$5 billion (US$3.37bn) in the development.
