Apple has signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with renewable energy developer Engie in Southern Italy.

The deal will support the construction of four new renewable projects and a wind repowering project; two wind farms with a combined capacity of 74MW, a wind repowering project with a capacity of 11MW, and two agrivoltaic plants with a combined capacity of 88MW.

According to the companies, all projects have received authorization and are expected to be operational between 2026 and 2027. Once operational, they will generate more than 400GWh on an annual basis.

Under the terms of the PPA, 80 percent of the generated capacity, some 138MW, will be allocated to Apple, with the remaining 20 percent supplied to the grid.

The Italian portfolio is part of Engie's broader renewable energy and storage development plan, which aims to support the installation of 1.6GW of capacity by 2030. According to the company, it has a portfolio of 773MW of capacity in operation or under construction in the country. This includes 18 solar projects with a combined capacity of 250MW, 20 wind farms with a capacity of 474MW, and four battery storage projects with a capacity of 49MW.

Engie is one of the largest renewable energy suppliers through PPAs in the world. It has constructed more than 4.3GW of renewable capacity in 2024 alone, signing deals with some of the biggest names in the data center industry. Most recently, the company signed a 90MW PPA with Google to supply the hyperscaler with power from its 350MW Chillingham solar project in Bell County, Texas.

Apple has signed several PPAs over the past two years in an effort to decarbonize its operations. Last April, the company signed a 105MW PPA in Spain with ib vogt to offtake power from the Castaño Solar project in the province of Segovia, northwest of Madrid.

Apple operates a total of seven data centers across the US, Denmark, and China, as well as utilizing a number of colocation sites. The company is a major Google Cloud and AWS customer. The company says all its data centers are powered by renewable energy via PPAs and other agreements.
