A third data center development is being planned in the Rome area of Georgia.

An unnamed developer, which already owns land in the city, has been granted the option of 15 additional adjacent acres along Highway 53 for a data center project.

The project, located across from a Lowe’s distribution center, is known as Project Sassy. Further details on the project, as well as the company behind the development, have not been shared.

The project’s developers entered an option with the Rome-Floyd County Development Authority (RFCDA) for the property in December.

“The project owns land adjacent to this property and was interested in entering an option to add this 15 acres to it,” RFCDA President Missy Kendrick told Northwest Georgia News.

The property, along Ga. 53, is a part of Lowe’s property and is owned by both the RFCDA and the Development Authority of Floyd County (DAFC). The DAFC will have to approve any sale of the land.

The option states that Project Sassy has the first choice to purchase the 15 acres within an 18-month window. The acres are for sale at $60,000 an acre.

Rome is located in Floyd County, northeast Georgia, close to the state border with Alabama, and around 70 miles from the state's existing data center hub in Atlanta. This is the third data center planned for Floyd County.

In October 2023, Microsoft purchased 347 acres of land outside Rome near Huffaker Road for a data center build, investing $1 billion in the project.

A second project was revealed last month; a 114-acre development next to Coosa High School a few miles away from the Microsoft site. Specifications of the campus and the company behind the project haven’t been shared yet.
