American Tower has received planning permission for two Edge data centers in the US.

The company this month announced it has secured locations in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Tampa Bay, Florida, for future Edge data center development.

American Tower said its construction-ready program is designed to accelerate customers’ time to market by securing zoning approval and confirming critical utilities, such as power and fiber, on land it owns. The company said as a result, it can bring capacity online in 12-18 months once an anchor lease agreement has been signed.

The company said its prefabricated design can offer liquid cooling, Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRAC), hot aisle containment, and more.

Set on 83.5 acres, the Oklahoma site is located at 1309 Northeast 122nd Street. The development could span 16,000 sq ft (1,486 sqm) and 4MW and features three fiber providers. The site is currently home to a radio broadcast tower for KJYO-FM Oklahoma City.

Located at 10700 76th Court in North Largo, the Tampa Bay facility will also reportedly offer 4MW on 2.3 acres. The wider 23-acre site has access to five fiber providers. The site is an office building with a cell tower, with online listings suggesting the property is occupied by payments firm Elavon.

As well as owning data center firm CoreSite, American Tower is developing a number of Edge data centers at cell tower sites across the US. The company has identified “more than 1,000 plots of land” that it owns or has long-term leases for potential development into multi-megawatt data centers.

It recently launched a 1MW facility in Raleigh, North Carolina, and has previously filed to develop another in San Antonio, Texas.

On its website, the company is listing construction-ready target sites across Sacramento, California (4MW); Austin (4MW), Houston, and San Antonio, Texas; Omaha, Nebraska; Detroit, Michigan (4MW); Baltimore, Maryland; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4MW); and Charlotte, North Carolina (1MW).

Philadelphia and Sacramento could reach construction-ready status in the first half of 2026.

The Charlotte site is located at 8036 Hood Road and is currently home to a radio broadcast tower for WEZC-FM Charlotte. The site has had its zoning approved for a 1MW development and is working towards permitting for a 4MW project. American Tower has filed to develop a 40,000 sq ft (3,716 sqm) facility on a six-acre portion of the 56-acre site.

American Tower recently paused plans for a 4MW facility at a broadcast tower site near Indianapolis, Indiana, after the city said it would be revising its zoning ordinances with regard to data centers.

American Tower has previously deployed several small Edge colocation sites - branded as Access Edge data centers - at existing tower locations in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Jacksonville, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; Austin, Texas; and Denver and Boulder, Colorado. The company seems to be moving away from these types of facilities, however, and DCD understands that all of those Access Edge sites have been discontinued, with the strategy shifting entirely towards these multi-megawatt Edge facilities.
