American Tower has deployed a 5G Distributed Antenna System (DAS) at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT).

The deployment provides improved wireless connectivity across the Pennsylvania airport's newly constructed and existing facilities.

American Tower notes that the system went live late last year as the new terminal was opened in November. According to the tower company, the deployment extends coverage to legacy concourses, back-of-house areas, and the operational zone.

The deployment of a neutral-host DAS means that multiple mobile carriers are able to use American Tower's infrastructure.

This DAS network spans the entire airport campus, including renovated concourses, central services, mechanical zones, and the newly opened terminal.

American Tower said it worked closely with the airport to navigate construction and design constraints, plus the need to maintain three separate legacy DAS networks during the new buildout.

“Partnering with PIT on this transformative network redevelopment has been an incredible opportunity,” said Eric Nagy, vice president, in-building networks, American Tower.

“This deployment showcases our ability to deliver high-performance wireless connectivity infrastructure in complex property environments. Building the new DAS while the terminal was still under construction—often without walls, ceilings, or defined pathways—required meticulous early planning and creative antenna placement strategies to ensure seamless coverage from day one.”

A Moodie Davitt report last year revealed that close to 10 million passengers travelled through Pittsburgh Airport in 2024.
