Amazon has confirmed it will provide low Earth orbit satellite Internet service for golf's DP World Tour.
The tech giant will provide connectivity via its Amazon Leo constellation.
In total, Amazon will connect 42 DP World Tour tournaments each year, with the first deployment set for this year.
Today's announcement builds on the partnership forged between the DP World Tour - a European golf tour - and Amazon Web Services (AWS) last year, when the latter was picked as the tour's official cloud provider.
The 42 tournaments on the DP World Tour span 25 countries across five continents, with many located in remote or rural locations where traditional Internet infrastructure is limited or nonexistent, which is one of the main use cases for satellite connectivity.
According to Amazon, its Leo offering will provide coverage across entire golf courses, while its satellite service will help power live scoring systems, fan apps, broadcast production, plus other services.
Amazon notes that the DP World Tour will use Amazon Leo to "blanket tournament venues with satellite coverage."
This includes the setting up and breaking down of the Leo Ultra, Leo Pro, and Leo Nano antennas.
"The DP World Tour needs connectivity for everything—not just the broadcast teams, but the scoring systems, merchandise tents, concession stands—all of it," said Chris Weber, vice president of Amazon Leo business and product. "They're often setting up in more rural places where Internet infrastructure just isn't there. Leo helps solve that problem. You show up, connect via satellite, and suddenly the entire tournament is online."
"With Amazon Leo satellite technology coming to the Tour—a first in world sport—we are one step closer to realizing our ambition of creating truly connected and intelligent courses, wherever we are in the world," added Michael Cole, chief technology officer at the DP World Tour.
Amazon is set to deploy its D2D satellite system from 2028, rivaling the likes of Elon Musk's SpaceX.
In January, Amazon Leo sought a 24-month extension to its satellite rollout due to launch shortages. The company had agreed to deploy 1,600 satellites by July 2026, half of its planned 3,236 satellite constellation.
Last week, the company confirmed it will acquire satellite operator Globalstar in a deal worth $11.57 billion.
