Libyan State-owned telco Almadar Aljadid has launched the country's first 5G network.

The carrier launched the network in the country's capital, Tripoli, earlier this week, becoming the first telco in Libya to do so.

The launch is part of a phased rollout, with the service set to be rolled out across more cities in the coming months.

Libya Herald reports that the service isn't widely available in Tripoli, but is currently limited to a few parts of the city.

The launch this week means that Libya is the latest North African market to launch 5G mobile services, following a high-profile launch in Egypt last year.

There were also 5G launches in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia last year.

Founded in 1995, Almadar Aljadid serves more than 5 million subscribers. The company claims to be the first mobile network operator and data provider in North Africa.
