Industrial firm ABB has launched a new suite of direct current (DC) power systems for data centers wanting to use 800VDC architectures.
The company recently announced the launch of Infinitus, a portfolio of direct current solutions designed to manage the increasing power demands of AI data centers and accelerate the adoption of DC architectures.
As GPU-heavy racks increase in density, Nvidia and hyperscalers are preparing for future generations to potentially reach 1MW per rack. This massive jump in density will require a shift to DC architecture, and many companies are starting to offer products tailored to 800VDC designs.
While efficiency is not the only factor, ABB noted that DC distribution in data centers could deliver energy efficiency gains of more than five percent, which at larger campuses could total megawatts of capacity.
Giampiero Frisio, president of ABB’s electrification business area, said: “ABB has pioneered DC technology for more than 25 years across several segments. We are working closely with chipmakers, hyperscale customers, supply partners and industry bodies to set the standards and the pace for the roll-out of high-efficiency DC architectures.
"Infinitus is the first portfolio providing the building blocks for any data center architecture - either DC native or hybrid AC/ DC - to power next-generation AI chips efficiently. This technology will bring similar energy efficiency gains to other energy-intensive industries such as large-scale manufacturing, renewables and marine operations.”
ABB said Infinitus is the industry's first integrated source-to-rack DC portfolio. The range includes ABB’s Infinitus solid-state transformer technology and static medium-voltage UPS in production.
The company said the first DC-native facilities using the complete Infinitus portfolio are expected to be installed and operational within two to three years.
