The Nordic heavy-industry conglomerate ABB is planning to establish a data center solutions hub in Singapore. The company’s first data center technology hub in Asia Pacific, the center will focus on selling its Decathlon data center infrastructure management (DCIM) suite into the Singapore market.

The company is looking to capitalize on the country’s robust and rapidly growing data center market that holds about half of South East Asia’s total data center capacity, according to ABB.

Tobias Becker, head of ABB’s Control Technologies business, said the company chose Singapore because of its robust infrastructure, talent availability and business-friendly environment, among other characteristics.

“We are confident that basing our regional hub in Singapore will best serve our customers in Asia Pacific,” Becker said.

Singapore’s total data center capacity is projected to grow from 2.4m sq ft in 2010 to 3.6m sq ft in 2015 – a 50% increase in five years, ABB said.

The Decathlon suite includes software, hardware and services for data center management. Scalable across multiple sites, the solution analyzes data like IT load patterns, weather forecasts and energy rates to predict and adjust data center energy consumption for maximum reliability and energy efficiency.

ABB recently added to Decathlon’s set of DCIM features by integrating the suite with nlyte, which gave it change management and capacity planning features. Commenting on the integration, Andy Lawrence, of the 451 Group, said the partnership gave the solution a full set of capabilities for enterprise data center management.

Before it entered the DCIM space, ABB was already a heavyweight player in the data center power infrastructure space, selling AC and DC electric distribution systems.
