A 936-acre data center could come to the city of Lubbock, Texas.

A proposal submitted by solar energy supplier Texas Solarworks LLC to rezone a land parcel southeast of East Municipal Drive and northeast of Northeast Loop 289 for uses related to power generation, transmission, and distribution was considered by the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission on January 8.

The commission voted against recommending the rezoning request, but the City Council, which has the final say, will be considering the proposal on January 27.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported that developer and applicant Texas Solarworks LLC would power the data center using a grid connection, gas power generation, and a solar farm.

Little information is known about Texas Solarworks LLC, which is being represented by land surveying firm Hugo Reed and Associates.

Citizens, especially those living close to the land parcel, have expressed concerns about the potential disruption caused by the project to their daily lives, projected energy use, water use, and more.

Lubbock is located in northwestern Texas. There has been some interest in Lubbock from data center operators – TeraWulf and AI cloud firm Fluidstack are set to develop a campus about 22 miles north of the city – but it is not one of the state’s major data center hotspots.
