An application for a 45MW data center next to AirTrunk's SYD2 Sydney North data center in Australia has been filed with planners in New South Wales.
The application was submitted on February 8, and is likely for an extension to the SYD2 facility.
The proposed data center will sit at 1 and 1a Apollo Place, extending to the Southeastern portion of 1 Sirius Road, Lane Cove West, for a total land area of 44,762 sqm (481,815 sq ft).
According to BCI Central, the data center has an estimated value of AU$200m (US$130m). The project will involve the demolition of existing structures and the development of a data center, ancillary office, 65 car parking spaces, and other landscaping and earthworks.
The architect listed is Greenbox Architecture Ptd Ltd, and the construction project manager EMKC3.
AirTrunk has yet to confirm the data center development, though if approved the new facility will directly back onto its existing SYD2 facility.
EMKC3 is also working on AirTrunk's SYD3 campus at 51 Huntingwood Drive, plans for which were revealed in July 2023.
DCD has contacted both EMKC3 and AirTrunk for further information, but neither has responded at the time of publication.
SYD2 was first announced in 2019 and opened in 2021, and a 30MW expansion topped off in November 2023 bringing its total IT capacity to 120MW.
At the time of the 30MW expansion, the company said a second and final phase of expansion was expected to be completed in 2024, likely this latest proposal.
According to AirTrunk's website, the facility currently spans 29,000 sqm (312,155 sq ft) of technical space and has a design PUE of 1.15.
The news comes after reports emerged that asset manager Blackstone is considering making a bid for AirTrunk. The company's existing backers, which include Macquarie Asset Management and PSP Investments, are said to be mulling a sale of the business for a price of up to AU$12 billion (US$7.9bn).
