A data center is being planned on the eastern border of Germany, in the city of Frankfurt (Oder).

As reported by local press, including MOZ and RBB24, a large data center is to be built on a site in the Markendorf district.

Frankfurt (Oder), also known as Frankfurt an der Oder, is a city in the state of Brandenburg, east of Berlin on the German border with Poland. It is more than 500km (311 miles) away from Frankfurt am Main, Germany’s major data center hub in the west of the country.

Frankfurt (Oder) Mayor Axel Strasser has confirmed to local press there is a project in the works on a site next to First Solar’s manufacturing plant.

Full details haven’t been shared, but the campus could see six 60MW buildings developed and likely require a new on-site substation.

According to Strasser, a company already based in the city plans to invest around €3.5 billion ($4.03bn) in the development, and plans to lease cloud and server services as well as computing power to customers.

There are no major data centers or data center firms in Frankfurt (Oder), with only a small number of local IT service providers operating in the area.
