Another large data center campus has been proposed in Pennsylvania.

As noted by local press, including the Morning Call and LehighValleyNews, industrial gas and chemical company Air Products is requesting permission to develop a 2.6 million sq ft (241,545 sqm) data center campus in Upper Macungie Township in Lehigh County, outside Allentown.

The 194-acre project, known as the Cetronia Road Data Center and located along Hamilton Boulevard and Cetronia Road, would total three buildings, ranging from 435,600 sq ft to 1.23 million sq ft (40,470-114,270 sqm).

Founded in Detroit in 1940, Air Products built its headquarters at the Upper Macungie site at 7201 Hamilton Blvd in the mid-1950s on what was previously farmland. The company moved to another location about a mile away on Mill Creek Road in 2021.

The site was previously planned for development into a warehouse complex, with Prologis involved. The companies gained approval for the planned development in 2023, which would have seen the existing buildings demolished.

As of last year, two companies occupied buildings on the site: specialty chemical company Evonik and chemical and material testing company Intertek.

Upper Macungie is looking to update its zoning ordinance to include regulations for data centers.

Pittsburgh and Philadelphia have long been Pennsylvania's two main data center hubs, but new developments are being proposed across the state. Not traditionally a major data center market, the Keystone State has seen gigawatts of new capacity proposed in recent months as companies look to secure capacity for AI build-outs.

A report published by DC Byte in September suggested Pennsylvania's data center market has grown exponentially, jumping from 231MW of total IT load in 2021 to around 7.8GW of planned load in 2025.

In July, various firms pledged to invest $90 billion in the state’s digital infrastructure following a summit attended by President Donald Trump.
