A 200MW data center is being planned in Kota Samarahan on the island of Borneo.
Singaporean engineering firm Cyclect Group and local conglomerate TSG Group this week announced the formation of FutureData Sdn Bhd, a new company that plans to build a 200MW data center in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, located on the northwest of Borneo Island.
MalayMail said the campus would be developed on a build-to-suit model. Timelines for development weren’t shared.
The consortium said its primary objective is to establish the “largest renewable energy-powered data center park” in Kota Samarahan. The project will be integrated into the FutureGreen District, a new township that emphasizes mixed developments powered by sustainable infrastructure.
Melvin Tan, managing director of Cyclect Group, said: “The data reveals that Sarawak possesses a unique combination of attributes that make it an exceptional location for data center development. The abundance of renewable power sources in Sarawak, including hydroelectric power, provides a sustainable energy supply to fuel data center operations.”
Dato Chris Chung, group CEO of TSG Group, added: “TSG seeks to do our part to meet our Premier’s vision towards a digital and sustainable economy. This data center will be developed in a new integrated green district called FutureGreen District, where healthcare, education, and high-end residential areas will cater to overseas individuals seeking a second home in Kuching.”
Kota Samarahan, formerly known as Muara Tuang, is a town in the south of Sarawak outside Kuching.
Irix, previously known as PP Telecommunication, last year launched a data center in Kuching. Four subsea cables – East-West Submarine Cable System, SEA-H2x, SKR1M, and BaSICS – currently or are set to land in the Kuching area.
Cyclect Group is an engineering firm that offers construction, facilities management, and electrical services. TSG Group owns real estate and plantations across Sarawak.
