Given today’s fast-moving, highly competitive landscape, it’s tempting to believe that bigger is always better. Higher densities and greater power demands call for larger racks, more cooling capacity, and additional square footage. But keeping pace doesn’t have to mean scaling up indiscriminately.
Context is key – and at the Edge, where the rise in power-dense workloads tends to be more gradual and consistent compared to most hyperscalers, there’s room to take a step back and think strategically. It’s about finding the most effective path forward – including when and how to scale, and when to upgrade.
For Oper8 Global Group’s SVP of APAC, Simon Naylor, efficiency is the name of the game. Across space, power, and cooling, Oper8’s modular approach to data center construction focuses on building smarter, not harder.
At the core of that approach is customization and a customer-first mindset. Build smarter, not harder
Prioritizing efficiency at the Edge and moving beyond a traditional design approach requires a mindset shift. It starts with stepping back and re-evaluating needs with fresh eyes and an open mind.
Oper8’s internal mantra – smarter Edge, smaller footprint – is rooted in the belief that the best solution often lies beyond the obvious. One example of this in action is Oper8’s work with an international tyre manufacturer. The company initially asked Oper8 to fit out a server room designed by an architect for its new headquarters.
Recognizing that carrying out the design as specified would be costly and time-consuming, Oper8 instead proposed a micro data center (MDC) solution that delivered the exact same requirements within a smaller footprint. This pivot shaved approximately 11 weeks off delivery time and saved 50 percent in construction and remediation costs.
Smarter design can deliver facilities that are not only quicker and easier to build, but more efficient to run. Cooling, for example, is a key area where smarter choices can, and should, be made. In many cases, the move from air to liquid cooling hasn’t been optional, but a necessity driven by ultra-high densities and increasing heat outputs.
But with the lower densities typically found inside Edge facilities, there is a choice. Operators have greater freedom to select the most efficient cooling method – whether that’s air, liquid, or a hybrid approach. The key is avoiding defaulting to legacy systems just because they’re familiar, or already in place.
You get what you need
Smart decision-making begins with understanding the unique needs of the operator. Naylor explains:
“We always design specifically for the customer, rather than trying to force a square peg into a round hole and pushing set designs. First comes customization, and then we work to make that design as efficient as possible for that operator.”
With the rapid rate of change across the industry showing no signs of slowing down, trying to predict needs even ten years down the line is impractical. Instead, designs must be tailored to meet today’s demands, guided by a roadmap for future growth. The facility itself should be ready to evolve when required, while staying aligned with core business goals.

“If you take our prefabricated data centers, the approach is similar every time,” explains Naylor. “We build the pods and fit them out in a controlled factory environment, which ensures a high-quality build, and installation of critical components.”
With a standardized foundation, power and cooling capacities can be tailored to suit each customer, perfectly balancing repeatability and flexibility. This approach allows for current needs to be met, while ensuring adaptability as and when requirements evolve.
And evolve they will. As technology continues to advance at a pace physical infrastructure is struggling to match, the pressure to deploy quickly and upgrade at speed is being felt across the industry:
“One of the greatest challenges today is deploying high-density compute into environments never designed for that level of capacity,” adds Naylor.
Facilities that have operated successfully for years can’t transform into future-ready data centers overnight. They simply don’t have the white space or power capabilities needed to handle the new normal: racks of 10, 12, 15 kilowatts, or even higher densities of 40, 60 and 80kW racks packed with CPUs and GPUs.
These rising densities demand a shift in design thinking, particularly within the white space. Flexible, scalable solutions are now mission-critical, and will ultimately determine the longevity of the facilities in which they’re housed
“It’s no longer about building the same way we always have just because it worked before,” adds Naylor.
Telecommunications companies present the ideal example: many have a number of old telephone exchanges or outdated Edge sites where they need to deploy 5G Edge compute, for instance, into a location that was never designed for that purpose.
These sites were set up to handle 30-year-old equipment, or even older. By adopting an MDC approach, the latest hardware can be deployed without having to refit the entire site with new power and cooling infrastructure.
Staying ahead of the curve also demands close collaboration across the supply chain, and the entire data center ecosystem. Understanding what’s possible today, and anticipating future needs, gives Oper8 a critical advantage.
“Our supplier relationships are a significant asset,” explains Naylor. “By working with them closely and building connections, we gain insight into what’s coming down the pipeline – so we can better advise our customers on design decisions.”
Creating long-term value
Efficiency must also mean delivering value for money. This is why Oper8 includes a detailed cost analysis for each and every project, breaking it down to the component level to evaluate value, and provide customers with options for optimization.
“That allows us to present customers with several design choices – each with clear cost and performance implications,” says Naylor. That clarity is key to delivering genuine efficiency and long-term value.
Once again, modular design plays a role here. Prefabricated solutions can be built to expand only when necessary. Customers can pay for capacity as and when they choose to grow, rather than spending upfront for a design based on future requirements that cannot be accurately pinned down.
“The alternative is to build for where you think you're going to end up,” explains Naylor. “That gets expensive fast – especially if you’re creating space you might never use.”
Deploying a smaller, contained solution at the Edge lowers both upfront and ongoing costs, providing efficiency across the board. Ongoing cooling costs, for instance, are reduced when cooling a confined space or set section, rather than vast open rooms.
Time is money, and when compared to a traditional bricks-and-mortar design approach, the time saved with a modular prefabricated solution – thanks to the ability to construct core components and critical infrastructure at the same time – is a major advantage in the race to keep pace.
Over the Edge, and beyond
“The rise in density isn’t going to slow down,” summarizes Naylor. “Nvidia’s plans for extreme rack densities won’t apply to every data center, but they’re indicative of a broader upward trend we all have to respond to.”
As density increases, what constitutes an efficient design for power, cooling, and infrastructure must also evolve at a similar rate. Today’s best practices won’t necessarily perform under tomorrow’s pressures.
That’s why designing for flexibility, and tailoring solutions to real-world needs, is so critical. It ensures that data centers are ready to support operations of the future – whatever that may entail.
