Category sponsor Munters presented DCD’s Hyperscale Data Center Innovation Award to Facebook (in collaboration with Cundall, Fjernvarme Fyn) at the DCD>Awards 2020 on December 3 2020. The coveted Hyperscale Data Center Innovation Award recognizes original designs or technological solutions within the hyperscale data center segment that will benefit the wider data center community.
The Odense Data Center is one of the most advanced, energy-efficient data centers in the world. It uses innovative cooling, achieving a PUE of 1.12 (target design value), and is supported by 100% renewable wind energy. The recently announced expansion will also heat 11,000 local homes.
This innovative approach to energy re-use will provide heating for the wider Odense community. The waste heat recovery system is a form of infrastructure that captures excess heat, and then recycles it into the local district’s heating system. The latest expansion announced by Facebook will enable the recovery of 165,000 MWh of energy per year.
This complex data center system utilizes Facebook’s expertise in adiabatic cooling technology, covering a total IT area of 48,00 SQM. Additionally, the data center has been designed with Facebook’s stringent policies around resilience, efficiency and sustainability.
The Odense data center fosters what Facebook terms ‘a zero-waste culture’ - recycling more than 90% of construction waste throughout the building process. Additionally, at least 20% of the materials used in construction were derived from recycled content. The embedding of a comprehensive set of sustainable design elements and constructions practices demonstrates Facebook’s willingness to push the limits of clean energy performance.
