As power densities continue to rise, overhead busway and high-power copper busbars must withstand higher voltages up to 800V DC, elevated temperatures, and demanding electrical loads without compromising safety or reliability. The insulation material becomes a critical part of the power distribution system, where electrical breakdown, heat, dimensional changes, or inadequate flame performance can create significant risks. In this showcase, we evaluate material candidates against key engineering criteria:
- Dielectric strength and thermal resistance under sustained high loads
- Dimensional stability, including water uptake (a key trade-off for glass-filled polyamides)
- Flame performance and alignment with key UL and IEC requirements
- Weight, stiffness, and design flexibility for scaling infrastructure
