Panel: Will the COVID-19 pandemic precipitate a rapid expansion of edge?
The Coronavirus pandemic is a truly disruptive ‘black swan’ event, impacting all aspects of life across the globe, the long term extent of which is not yet fully known. Some say the results could be a delay to edge and 5G investment and deployment, others however predict it will act as a catalyst to certain types of edge and that telcos and other service providers could ultimately find this crisis a stimulant to accelerate internal and business model change.
One thing is clear, existing networks weren’t built for the level of demand experienced during the pandemic, exposing the need for 1000s of internet exchange points and more diversified routes to cope - “basically, if we don’t build the edge properly, the next time this happens the internet will break.”
We ask a panel of experts what they think will happen.
