Ian Goh was a true trailblazer in the tech community in Singapore, with a legacy that spans decades of passion, innovation, and mentorship.

As one of the founding members of the Singapore Computer Society and the Data Centre Chapter, Ian played an instrumental voluntary role in shaping the evolution of data centers in Singapore and across the Asia-Pacific region. From the early days of setting up data centers in the unique climate of Singapore to contributing to the modern Internet infrastructure we rely on today, Ian’s work was foundational.

Ian’s passing in June 2024, after a battle with cancer, leaves a void in the tech world.

In an industry often marked by siloed knowledge, Ian stood apart as a beacon of collaboration and generosity, always eager to share his expertise with others - especially with younger professionals navigating new and complex fields.

Ian’s distinguished career spanned over three decades, with key roles at leading companies like Compaq and Microsoft. He left an indelible mark on every organization he served. But it was beyond his professional achievements where Ian truly shone.

A passionate advocate for the data center industry, Ian championed talent development and sustainability. He was a foundational figure in shaping the Data Centre Chapter of the Singapore Computer Society (SCS), serving as a founding member and later as part of the executive committee. As a visionary leader, he laid the groundwork for numerous successful initiatives, fostering collaboration and strengthening the community.

Ian was instrumental in organizing talent development discussions, hosting technical sharing sessions, and engaging students through talks on campuses. His tireless efforts extended to SGTech, where he supported the Data Centre Tech Work Group, helping drive critical conversations about sustainability and workforce development.

Ian’s contributions to the tech community in Singapore are far-reaching, and his impact will be felt for years to come. We honour his immense contributions and celebrate the legacy he leaves behind. Ian will always be remembered for his dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to improving the tech industry.

Ian was more than just a colleague - he was a friend, mentor, and an inspiring force who shaped the careers of everyone he met.

I first met Ian during a pivotal moment in my own career, having transitioned from the data center sector to a software firm. It was then that Ian reached out, inviting me to meet at a local canteen. His eloquent speech and unwavering belief in the industry immediately left an impression.

Ian’s passion for innovation, especially in heat removal solutions, reignited my interest in the data center world. He guided me through technical discussions, co-authoring write-ups, and creating promotional materials for IP registration. His generosity shone through when he featured me in one of those videos, offering encouragement and mentorship.

Ian was not just a technical expert; he was a mentor who emphasised continuous learning. He taught me to see beyond the machines and recognise the emotional investment of our customers. His holistic approach and thoughtful insights profoundly shaped my career.

Ian’s creativity extended to everything he did. When naming our rear-door heat removal solution, he drew inspiration from the iconic R&B group “Kool & The Gang,” calling it “Kool Logix.” His blend of humor, music, and innovation made every project memorable.

Even after I left the company, Ian remained a steadfast friend. We continued to meet at industry events, where I often reminded him to take care of his health. Despite his frail appearance at the last Data Centre World, Ian’s trademark smile and humility never faltered.

As we bid farewell to Ian, we remember him not only for his technical brilliance but for his kindness, passion, and integrity. His legacy will continue to inspire us all to approach life with the same dedication and warmth he shared so freely.

Rest in peace, Ian. You will be deeply missed, but your spirit will forever guide us.

Ian played a pivotal role in establishing SGTech’s first workgroup, offering unwavering support from day one.

Always eager to contribute, Ian worked tirelessly to advance the tech industry. He recognised the importance of bridging the gap between Singapore’s tertiary education institutions, from ITEs to polytechnics and universities, and championed collaboration across all levels.

Beyond his educational initiatives, Ian was a true catalyst for innovation within the data center industry. His contributions, which constantly pushed the boundaries of the sector, helped elevate the industry to new heights.

More than just a colleague, Ian was a true mentor. He dedicated countless hours to helping peers and mentees eager to learn, offering guidance with patience and generosity. His contributions to the SGTech technical workgroup shaped its direction and initiatives, ensuring a lasting impact.

Ian was also a dear friend. We shared countless conversations about how to collectively improve the industry, and his positive spirit and exceptional attitude inspired everyone he met. His selflessness and the lasting impact he made on our community will never be forgotten.

In a field known for its close-knit nature, Ian’s warmth, mentorship, and unwavering dedication immediately stood out. Whether offering expert advice, organizing events, or simply listening, Ian became a pillar of the Singapore tech community, sharing his knowledge selflessly - even as the pandemic reshaped our world.

Despite personal health challenges, Ian’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment never wavered. He mentored countless individuals, inspiring many with his resilience and his willingness to go the extra mile. His passion for the industry, coupled with his generosity, made him a true leader in the tech world.

At a data center conference in 2023, Ian’s enthusiasm remained infectious, despite his ongoing health issues. He spoke passionately about his new company and innovative plans for data center cooling, while also introducing me to peers and connecting others in the industry. His selflessness and collaborative spirit were unparalleled, leaving a lasting mark on all who crossed his path.

Ian’s legacy as a mentor, advocate for sustainability, and tireless volunteer will continue to shape Singapore’s tech community for years to come. His generosity and dedication to helping others are qualities we will deeply miss.
