Nicole Starosielski

Nicole Starosielski is a Professor of Film and Media at the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Starosielski researches and writes about undersea cables, alongside other digital infrastructures and environmental media.

Her first book, The Undersea Network, documented the long history of submarine communications cables, starting with the telegraph cables that formed the first global networks in the 1860s and extending to the fiber-optic infrastructure that now carries much international Internet traffic.

Her specialties include telecommunications history, digital cultures and global media.
