Innio Group announces the success of a 60MW data center powered by its proven Jenbacher technology. Winthrop Technologies selected the Jenbacher Type 6 engines to power the hyperscale data center in Dublin, Ireland. The greenfield project features 22 containerized Jenbacher engines that can be converted to run on hydrogen when the fuel is more readily available.

The Jenbacher engines provide 60MW of continuous rated power output that is compliant with EU emission regulations. Used for emergency backup power and grid stabilization in times of higher demand, the power plant supports growing renewable power generation in the region. Operating on pipeline gas, the Jenbacher engines emit up to 25 percent less CO2 and up to 90 percent less NOx emissions compared to traditionally used diesel generators.

“We are pleased that Winthrop chose Innio Group’s sustainable and resilient technology. With our Jenbacher Type 6 engines, Winthrop can take advantage of hydrogen power the moment it becomes available as our engines are built to be upgraded quickly and seamlessly,” said Dr. Olaf Berlien, president and CEO of Innio Group.

“The Winthrop gas gen team selected Innio Group’s Jenbacher team to build this power plant because the engines have diesel-like performance in combination with high efficiency and the ability to run continuously,” said Noel Molloy, operation director at Winthrop Technologies.

“Having received a platinum medal status in response to solid progress and execution of their ESG strategy including hydrogen readiness, Innio Group’s Jenbacher technology was an obvious choice for us.”

Ireland has benefited from significant amounts of foreign tech investment over the past decade, transforming the country into one of Europe’s largest hyperscale data center hubs. Today, Dublin’s standing as Europe’s second-largest data center hub creates a challenge for the country’s energy infrastructure as server farms are increasingly integrated into the national grid. Innio Group’s Jenbacher island mode solution allows the Winthrop power plant to operate independently from the national grid during peak times while also supporting the grid during peak power.

Innio Group’s 22 fast-start and scalable Jenbacher Type 6 engines were installed in a plug-and-play containerized configuration. In addition, Innio Group provided Winthrop with secure, real-time monitoring of the power plant through its cloud-based digital platform solution myPlant. The project supports Ireland’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
