Solid-state transformer developer DG Matrix has struck a strategic collaboration with PowerSecure, a Southern Company subsidiary, to accelerate deployment of next-generation power infrastructure for AI data centers and large-scale electrification projects.

The deal, announced 9th December, brings together DG Matrix's Power Router platform with PowerSecure's national footprint in microgrid development and lifecycle services. For DG Matrix, headquartered in the Raleigh-Durham area, the partnership provides immediate access to customer channels, deployment capacity, and service coverage that would otherwise take years to build organically.

The timing reflects mounting pressure across the data center industry to find faster, more flexible paths to power. Traditional utility interconnection timelines have stretched to five years or more in many markets, creating an opening for distributed energy solutions that can be deployed incrementally and integrated with onsite generation, storage, and grid resources.

DG Matrix claims to have commercialized the world's first multi-port solid-state transformer, a technology that simplifies the integration of diverse power sources and loads.

The company's standardized platform is designed to enable faster deployment and lower energy costs compared to conventional transformer-based architectures, while supporting flexible configurations of renewables, battery storage, and utility grid connections.

PowerSecure brings more than two decades of experience in distributed energy infrastructure, having developed, installed, and serviced over three gigawatts of microgrid capacity across the US. The company has also implemented more than $1 billion in energy efficiency upgrades for commercial and industrial customers.

The emphasis on "dynamic AI load requirements" speaks to one of the defining challenges facing data center operators today. Training clusters for large language models can swing from idle to full power draw within minutes, placing stress on both on-site electrical systems and upstream grid infrastructure. Power architectures that can absorb these transients while maintaining efficiency are increasingly sought after.

Neither company disclosed specific project commitments or financial terms of the collaboration. However, the structure appears designed to let DG Matrix focus on technology development while PowerSecure handles customer acquisition, system integration, and long-term maintenance, a division of labor that could accelerate market penetration for the Power Router platform.

The partnership adds to a growing roster of alternative power delivery models gaining traction in the data center sector, as operators look beyond traditional utility-scale grid connections to meet capacity demands that show no sign of slowing.
