On the surface, tighter controls seem logical when dealing with dense AI clusters pumping out massive heat loads. But are tenants asking for colder water because it’s truly needed, or are they just accustomed to outdated, inefficient cooling systems? This is where liquid cooling experts and data center operators need to collaborate closely.
When communication breaks down, AI-focused customers might inadvertently push for cooling solutions that are less efficient – or even harmful – in the long run. And in a world where cooling is just as critical as power, these missteps represent significant missed opportunities.

But the truth is, there’s an entire ecosystem of organizations in the middle that need to stay profitable and efficient while delivering the power and cooling that AI demands. For many, this means sticking to broadly applicable form factors. Sure, producing data center IT equipment the same way you’d make gear for an enterprise network closet might help companies sell more products to a larger market.
Commonality brings simplicity, efficiency, and profitability for manufacturers – but it also stifles progress on critical elements like deployment density, liquid cooling solutions, and other vital aspects of AI innovation.
High-density AI clusters in a state-of-the-art data center are a completely different beast compared to standard IT deployments. Bridging the gap between varying interests across the ecosystem is crucial for thinking holistically about the future. When solutions are designed to cater to a wide audience, the specific efficiencies needed for narrow, high-performance use cases inevitably get lost.
But this isn’t an unsolvable issue. Hyperscalers have figured out how to build their own silicon and custom chips, sidestepping the sluggishness of a disconnected ecosystem to achieve new heights in cost efficiency, power efficiency, processing power, and customer-centric precision. We’d all love to have hyperscale-level resources at our disposal, but for most, that’s just not in the cards.
Ultimately, our progress at the intersection of AI and the data center depends on our willingness to compromise and collaborate. As AI’s influence and urgency continue to expand, the need for consolidation is clear, but our ability to meet these emerging demands will hinge on how quickly we can work together across the supply chain.
So, whether we’re talking big picture or granular details, the need for a paradigm shift is undeniable. The good news? The way we address these challenges – through genuine partnerships and shared understanding – will determine how quickly we see AI data centers evolve into their full potential.
