Yahoo has cited a severed undersea cable as the source of a widespread email outage that has affected its users since November 20. The company said that a cable repair ship is fixing the problem, but has yet to issue a timeline on when full service may be restored.

A user help page first described the problem on Nov. 20, informing account holders that an unnamed third-party apparently cut the undersea fiber cable while attempting to repair another one nearby. Yahoo also informed its email users via the same advisory brief that company engineers were re-routing traffic to “mitigate accessibility issues”, but as of today users continue to voice their displeasure with a number of issues via Facebook, Twitter, and other online forums.

“The underwater cable cut affecting our network has now been located”, Yahoo noted in an advisory update yesterday, without passing on the location to concerned users. It added that “testing and repairs are currently taking place.”

The widespread downtime has significantly affected Yahoo Mail users across the globe, with high concentrations in the US, UK, and Germany. Although the outage’s severity appears to have declined over the past 24 hours, many users are still reporting they are unable to access their accounts or read messages, according to online tracker Downdetector.
