Yahoo! wants to purchase another piece of land near its existing data center in Lockport, New York, famous for being the first data center built to the “Yahoo! Computing Coop” (YCC) design (also known as the “Chicken Coop” design).

Local economic-development officials are ready to approve the sale, The Buffalo News reported. Quoting town attorney Daniel Seaman, the news outlet said the deal was slated for approval during the Industrial Development Agency’s meeting Thursday.

Since it launched the first YCC data center on its 30-acre Lockport property in 2010, Yahoo! has built three more buildings using the design, the company’s project manager for data center development Mozan Totani told us in July.

The design maximizes the use of free cooling and minimizes the use of fans to move outside air through the building and the IT equipment. Since it built the first coop, the company has kept the design largely the same, making only minor updates to ensure speed of deployment.

While town officials are not 100% sure Yahoo! will use the new land for data center expansion, the likelihood that that will be the case is high.

“They’ve given us every reason to believe it would be developed for data center purposes,” town economic development coordinator David Kinyon told The Buffalo News. Yahoo! has not given the officials any indication of a timeline for construction, however.

Yahoo! is enjoying extensive tax breaks in Lockport, including an 18-year property-tax exemption, which for the first 10 years of the agreement (started in 2009) is 100%.
