The technology park includes a carrier-neutral data center and cable landing station, as well as an innovation center for promoting local tech talent.

The President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guellah, was in attendance at the launch.

Wingu said its cable landing station strengthens Djibouti’s strategic position, connecting Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, enhancing its role as a global telecommunications hub.

“We are excited to witness the launch of the TO7 Technology Park, which will serve as a catalyst for Djibouti’s digital economy,” said Nicholas Lodge, co-founder and chief strategy officer at Wingu. “This park not only provides world-class infrastructure but also fosters innovation, job creation, and economic growth. It is an important step toward positioning Djibouti as a leader in the global tech space, and we are proud to be part of this journey.”

Wingu now operates five data centers in Tanzania, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. Its existing facility in Djibouti has been in operation for more than a decade.

While not a major data center market, Djibouti is a major cable landing point in East Africa. There are currently ten subsea cables landing in Djibouti, with a further three under construction. Cables landing in the country include AAE-1, DARE1, EASSy, Europe India Gateway, SeaMeWe-3, and Aden-Djibouti. The 2Africa cable landed in Djibouti in 2022 and is set to go live this year.

The Djibouti Data Center (DDC) in Djibouti City, which hosts the Djibouti Internet Exchange (DjIX) opened in 2013. The DDC is a joint venture between Djibouti Telecom and Djibouti Data Center SARL, a group of local and international investors.

Earlier this year, African cloud and colo provider PAIX announced plans to construct a 5MW Djibouti data center in collaboration with the Djibouti Sovereign Fund.
