Westinghouse Electric Company is teaming up with Google Cloud to use AI for the construction of nuclear reactors.
Additionally, AI R&D lab Tzafon has selected Google's AI infrastructure for its work building models.
Westinghouse and Google go nuclear
Under the agreement with Google, Westinghouse will combine its existing HiVE and bertha nuclear AI solutions with Google Cloud technologies to help improve both the construction of new nuclear power plants, and its existing fleet.
The energy company will be using Google's Vertex AI, Gemini, and BigQuery technologies.
“As the only fully licensed, construction-ready modular reactor available today, our AP1000 technology is the quickest way to add new sources of affordable and abundant nuclear energy to the US grid,” said Dan Sumner, Westinghouse's interim CEO. “By partnering with Google Cloud to enhance our HiVE and bertha technology, and backed by 75 years of our proprietary nuclear data, we can accelerate the deployment of new AP1000 units while implementing powerful AI technologies that will optimize the construction and operations of nuclear power plants.”

Westinghouse deployed the world’s first commercial pressurized water reactor in 1957. The company's HiVE and bertha AI solutions are based on the company's data and experience that has been accumulated over almost 70 years since.
Earlier this year, European data center firm Data4 signed an agreement to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs) from Westinghouse. The nuclear company is also among five to receive conditional commitments from the US Department of Energy to provide high-assay, low-enriched uranium.
Westinghouse is reportedly set to provide four 1GW AP1000 reactors to Fermi America for a data center campus in Texas.
Tzafon opts for Google Cloud AI infrastructure
San Francisco-based startup and AI R&D lab Tzafon has selected Google Cloud to support its efforts in building models to support AI agents.
The company will use Nvidia GPUs via Google Cloud to train new machine intelligence models, and will be able to scale workloads up and down using Google Kubernetes Engine.
Tzafon will also develop individual agents capable of interacting with operating systems, web browsers, and applications on a person’s behalf.
According to Google, more than 60 percent of the world’s generative AI startups are using Google Cloud.
During Google's recent cloud summit in London, the company announced several AI partnerships it was working on with organizations in the UK, including the Imperial War Museums, Additive Catchments, Formula E, Lush, and Morrisons.
