Virgin Media O2 has expanded its 5G Standalone footprint in Norfolk, UK.

The upgrades in Norfolk will provide access to around 940,000 people across Norfolk with Virgin Media O2's 5G SA network.

It's part of the telco's £700 million ($925m) Mobile Transformation Plan to bolster its connectivity across the country.

Virgin Media O2 notes that it has switched on 5G SA in Norwich, Great Yarmouth, Kings Lynn, and Thetford. The service is available to its customers in these areas at no extra cost.

The carrier launched its 5G SA network in February of last year.

According to Virgin Media O2, the upgrades will expand its outdoor 5G SA coverage to 90 percent across Norfolk.

5G SA is a network that is not reliant on older mobile generations and solely uses a 5G core network; it will be better equipped to embrace AI.

"By expanding our 5G Standalone network to Norfolk, we are upgrading services for local people and are excited about the opportunities the new network will bring. This customer-centric rollout is about futureproofing our network and will pave the way for exciting customer-led innovations that lie ahead.”

Earlier this month, Virgin Media O2 deployed what it claims to be the UK's first 5G SA small cells in Birmingham.

Virgin Media's total 5G SA footprint sits at just over 70 percent of the UK's population, as of September.
