First reported by WSPY News, the Minooka Village Board approved the creation of a data center zoning district last week.

Village administrator Dan Duffy said this would help with the possible addition of a data center facility in the future.

He added that data centers bring less truck traffic and fewer jobs, but would help lower property taxes.

The village has reportedly been in discussions with a number of operators in recent years for projects that could total hundreds of acres.

Further details have not yet been disclosed. Minutes of the meeting that took place on November 20, 2024, are not yet available.

Minooka is a village located in the north of Illinois, just outside of Aurora, in Grundy, Kendall, and Will counties.

CyrusOne has 10 facilities, both operational and under construction, in Aurora. The operator broke ground on its 40MW campus in Kendall County in October.

Illinois has recently become a popular data center market with Iron Mountain, Stream, Digital Realty, Centersquare, NTT, Prime, Coresite, DataBank, EdgeConneX, Aligned, Stack, Cogent, Microsoft, ColoHouse, Ascent, T5, Edged, AWS, Meta, Compass, Lumen, and Equinix all operating in the state.
