Data center services provider ViaWest came out Wednesday as one of the two tenants of the large data center campus in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado, recently purchased by data center wholesaler Digital Realty Trust.

The facility in the City of Aurora is ViaWest’s flagship data center in the Denver market. ViaWest is headquartered in nearby Greenwood Village.

Digital announced acquisition of the 290,000 sq ft data center campus, consisting of three interconnected buildings, earlier this month. Together, the buildings hold about 170,000 sq ft of data center space, almost all of which is occupied by ViaWest and one other tenant, whose name Digital has not disclosed.

ViaWest chairman and CEO Roy Dimoff said his company anticipated many benefits from the relationship with its new landlord. “Digital Realty and ViaWest are very familiar with one another and we are excited to have a new partner with Digital Realty's experience and expertise in the data center industry,” he said.

Denver metro is one of the emerging second-tier US data center markets. Competition in such markets has been heating up, as smaller players recognize demand for data center services in these regions that is not adequately satisfied by the largest providers, who tend to focus on prime markets like the Silicon Valley, New York or Chicago metros.

In addition to this site, ViaWest, which provides colocation, hosting, cloud and managed services, has 23 data centers around the US, including locations in Colorado, Texas, Oregon, Utah and Nevada.

Digital realty is the world’s largest data center owner and operator. Operating as a real estate investment trust (REIT), the company boasts a portfolio that exceeds 100 properties around the world, comprising about 21m sq ft.
