The announcement comes a few days after Verizon Frontline completed the communications upgrade for the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), where it replaced a legacy central exchange (Centrex) phone system with a more modern solution.

According to Verizon, the 5G boost for New York's police force will provide high speed, low latency, and massive capacity to the police officers on duty.

The carrier said its 5G connectivity will provide the police force with Mobile Data Terminals (MDTs) and associated law enforcement applications, GPS, radios, wireless printers/scanners, license plate readers, sensors, and mobile and fixed camera systems.

Mobile World Live noted that Verizon said its 5G service for the police uses a mobile VPN to provision the services and applications.

Verizon Frontline is the company's dedicated connectivity solution for first responders in the US.
