Utilidata, an energy AI infrastructure platform, has raised an additional $40 million as part of its Series C funding round, bringing the total raised to $100 million.
The round was led by existing investor Renown Capital Partners, with participation from Keyframe Capital. The funding extension follows Utilidata’s initial Series C funding round, which closed in June of last year.
"Power availability is the defining constraint for data centers right now," said Josh Brumberger, CEO of Utilidata. "Karman squeezes every watt out of the power you already have, and makes every new megawatt you bring online work smarter. We're commercializing this at exactly the right moment, and we're grateful for the investors who've backed us to do it."
The company said that the funding will expand the deployment capabilities of its power orchestration platform, Karman, which was developed in collaboration with Nvidia.
Karman is designed for grid operations. According to the company, the platform provides real-time visibility, identifies and manages distributed energy resources, enhances resiliency, and offsets the need for future infrastructure investments. The platform can be integrated into smart meters, providing AI solutions to utility companies and their customers.
The platform was developed using a custom Nvidia chip, which the company claims provides 100 times the processing power of other meter-based solutions. The platform can connect to millions of endpoints and coordinate them to monitor and react to real-time conditions.
The extension precedes Utilidata’s first commercial deployment with NexGen Cloud, which is expected to go live in Montreal, Canada, next month, and target up to 50 percent additional usable capacity.
“We’ve believed in this team for a long time, and this round reflects our conviction that Karman is the breakthrough technology at exactly the right moment,” said John Rapaport, CIO, Keyframe Capital. “AI data centers can’t afford to wait for new power capacity. They need to maximize what they have now, and that is exactly what Karman delivers.”
The funding is also expected to allow the company to significantly boost its workforce. The company announced that it has appointed Kit Chee as chief commercial officer, and has increased its overall workforce by 25 percent this year alone.
