UScellular has announced it will rebrand itself as Array Digital Infrastructure.

The company's new name reflects the switch in strategy from a regional mobile carrier to a tower company.

The timing of the rebrand comes as T-Mobile is expected to complete its $4.4 billion acquisition of significant assets from UScellular in August 2025, after getting approval from the Federal Communications Commission earlier this month.

UScellular, which serves 4.5 million mobile customers across 21 US states in mostly rural areas, has struggled to keep up with the big three US carriers.

The company also struck separate spectrum deals with AT&T and Verizon for $1bn each last year.

As part of that deal, T-Mobile will scoop up UScellular's operations, including its customer base and around 30 percent of the company's wireless spectrum.

With that deal expected to close on August 1, UScellular has also announced that Douglas W. Chambers will serve as interim president and chief executive officer of the post-closing business, Array.

Chambers is currently the EVP, chief financial officer, and treasurer of UScellular.

"As we progress through the divestiture of the wireless operations, we are pleased to take these next steps in announcing leadership as well as the new legal name, Array Digital Infrastructure, Inc., of the post-closing company," said LeRoy T. Carlson, Jr., board chair, UScellular.

"Doug brings decades of industry experience and a robust understanding of the company's strategy and overall operations, making him well-suited to serve as interim president and CEO."

UScellular's decision to move away from wireless operations means the company will push to strengthen its telecom tower focus. Currently, the company owns approximately 4,400 towers.

"We have a great opportunity ahead of us and I look forward to working with the Board and our management team to continue to strengthen our tower business, seek opportunities to monetize our retained spectrum, and work towards closing the announced spectrum transactions," said Chambers.

Chambers joined Telephone and Data Systems, Inc. (TDS), the company that owns an 83 percent stake in UScellular, in 2007. Over the past six years, he has served as EVP, CFO, and treasurer at UScellular and is also on the company's board.
