US Army Corps of Engineers has awarded the about $1.2bn data center construction project in Utah to a three-company team of contractors, including Balfour Beatty, DPR and Big-D.

The contract is to design and build a 65MW data center for the National Security Agency at the US National Guard’s Camp Williams base in Riverton (about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City). The project includes a one-million-sq-ft facility ÔÇô 100,000 sq ft of which will be occupied by the data center ÔÇô and all necessary electrical and mechanical infrastructure, according to Army Corps documents.

The rest of the building will be occupied by technical support and administrative space and supporting facilities, including water-treatment facilities, vehicle inspection facility, interim visitor control center, perimeter site security measures, fuel storage, water storage, chiller plant, fire suppression systems and 100-percent electrical generator and UPS back-up capacity.

The data center is required to be built to Tier III infrastructure-redundancy standards.

The winning team was selected from a list of more than 370 bidders, which was reduced to a list of five in April. Balfour Beatty is a large construction firm with headquarters in Dallas and London. The company provides professional, construction, support and infrastructure-investment services.

DPR is a California-based building contractor, whose portfolio includes a number of high-profile data center projects, including the new Facebook data center in Prineville, Oregon, a Pixar facility in Emeryville, California, a Digital Realty Trust data center in the Silicon Valley and a Kaiser Permanente data center in Napa, California.

Big-D is a Utah construction company, whose prior customers include Hill Air Force base, University of Utah and Utah Museum of Natural History, according to the company’s website.
