The upcoming spectrum launches in the US could generate $100 billion in proceeds over the next couple of years, according to the Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr.

Carr said the upcoming auctions, which includes the Upper C-Band next year, could generate the lucrative sum.

As reported by Reuters, Carr said the FCC is pushing to carry out three additional auctions following ​the C-Band auction, saying it has provided formal notification of the plans with a ​goal of completing them by the end of 2028.

The planned C-Band auction next year is set to be held by July, with up to 160MHz of spectrum up for grabs.

Carr previously stated that the harmonized band "will be the envy of the world."

He told Reuters that interest in wireless spectrum extends between the 'Big 3' US carriers AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, which ramps up competition for the assets.

"We're seeing real response ​in the market in ways that we didn't see just a couple of years ago," said Carr.

It comes as the likes of Elon Musk's SpaceX continue to bid for spectrum to build out their satellite offering via Starlink. The company notably acquired $17bn worth of spectrum from EchoStar last year.

The planned spectrum auctions are significant for the US carrier market after the FCC regained its ability to authorize spectrum auctions once again last year after Congress allowed the FCC's authority to lapse in March 2023, for the first time ever.
