The following content is from an older version of this website, and may not display correctly. Uganda reported an 'Internet blackout' on 7 March due to two cut fiber connections between the country and Kenya.
A report in local Ugandan news website New Vision said the EASSY cable, the largest submarine cable in sub-Saharan Africa which is due to undergo upgrade work to increase capacity to 40Gbps this year, and the TEAMS link had been severed in Kenya.
The reported quoted the Chief Executive of Ugandan telecommunications company MTN Themba Khumalo who said customers had lost connections with TEAMS being its main connectivity supplier and EASSY being its backup.
The report alluded to sabotage. Both cables provide important links to undersea cables.
"In Kenya there seems to be a problem with fiber;there is suspected sabotage going on," Khumalo said.
Another telecommunications provider Airtel Uganda, however, said it has not experienced issues with its connections.
EASSY said its system is the largest serving Africa. It claims to deliver 3.84 Terabits per second.
It was only launched last year following investment by 25 telecommunications operators, most of which are from Africa.
