Social networking site Twitter will be renting more data center space in Atlanta after a high demand from the East Coast and Europe according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

Twitter is expected to lease 80,000 sq ft of space in the Atlanta-Metro facility operated by Quality Technology Services (QTS).

The social network currently leases around 100,000 sq ft in the data center, which is the size of nearly 17 football pitches.

The expanded Atlanta capacity will improve the speed and reliability of Twitter’s service to its East Coast and European users.

In its Q2 2014 results – ended June 30 2014 – Twitter announced a net loss of US$145m although user growth and engagement grew during the World Cup.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said: “We served up tailored experiences for each individual match and for the overall World Cup and these experiences felt alive”.
