Turkish telecom operator Turkcell has given a detailed outline of its response to the devastating earthquakes that hit the country last month.

Two earthquakes within the space of 12 hours hit Türkiye and Syria on February 6, leading to widespread Internet outages across the impacted areas, with Gaziantep among the worst hit.

These earthquakes were felt across 11 cities across Southeastern Türkiye, said Turkcell, with the epicenter hitting Kahramanmaraş.

Over 55,000 people are confirmed to have died in Türkiye and Syria.

In a lengthy statement, the operator even revealed that 21 of its employees died during the earthquakes, while noting that half of its 3,300 base stations in the region were out of service immediately after the earthquakes due to 'power outages and destruction'.

"We rapidly deployed more than 1,200 network personnel to the region to make the necessary repairs. We swiftly reactivated 99 percent of our sites by deploying around 250 mobile base stations and 1,400 electric generators to compensate for one tower and around 150 base stations that were destroyed. We began to provide Wi-Fi services via mobile base stations in tent and container areas."

The company, which provides telecom services to 6.5 million subscribers in the region, added that it offered free communication packages to subscribers, healthcare personnel, and emergency teams in the region, while also providing one month of free communication to subscribers in the region.
