TSMC will build two additional fabs in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, bringing the company’s total number of facilities in the region to five.
The news comes four months after the chip maker announced plans for a third 2nm fab at the 238-hectare Nanzih Technology Industrial Park in Kaohsiung.
Dubbed P4 and P5, the fabs, which local media outlets report were announced by the city’s mayor, are already in the planning stage, with environmental assessments expected to begin shortly.
The company broke ground on its P1 fab in August 2022, with mass production at the facility expected from next year, while P2 and P3 are in the construction phases. However, the land the fabs are being built on previously housed a state-owned oil refiner, meaning the company has had to undertake a large soil reclamation and cleanup operation before work could begin.
Outside of Taiwan, TSMC this week signed a Memorandum of Understanding with US semiconductor product packaging and test services company, Amkor Technology which will see the company provide TSMC with turnkey advanced packaging and test services at its planned outsourced semiconductor assembly and test company (OSAT) plant in Peoria, Arizona.
Also today (October 9) ahead of the company’s full Q3 2024 financial report, TSMC announced that revenue for the previous three months totaled $23.4 billion, beating guidance and a current record high for the company. However, it should be noted that the figure is not Q3 revenue and is instead based on July – September monthly revenue that has not been adjusted for foreign exchange rates.
