A tower technician has died after reportedly falling from a 500 foot cell tower in Trinity County, Texas.
The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) confirmed the death and said it is investigating the incident.
As reported by KBTX, the TCSO noted that it received a welfare check request yesterday (November 5) after a MasTec Network Solutions employee reportedly failed to return home the night before.
The last known task the employee had carried out was at a tower just off SH 94 in Groveton.
However, on arrival at the site, the TSCO confirmed that it found a deceased man, who has been named as 38-year-old James Belcher.
"Preliminary investigation shows that the man had been climbing the tower and appears to have fallen on a platform suspended about 8’ in the air. A complete investigation is being conducted and no further details are being released at this time," said the TSCO in a Facebook post.
A number of comments on the post suggest the technician was working at the site alone.
The 500-foot guyed tower, built in 1997, is owned by Crown Castle, according to Wireless Estimator.
It's the second fatality to hit the tower industry in the US this year after a contractor fell 200 feet from a tower in North Carolina in June.
DCD's sympathies go out to the family and friends of James Belcher.
